Rant: Fanfiction

This was originally supposed to be posted on livejournal, (whom I suspect was censoring me) as a response to the writer's block question. When I attempted to post this on LJ, I repeatedly was told that there was a client error, and a problem with my entry content (no explanation). Therefore, I am posting this on Dreamwidth, but keep in mind that I would not have done so if this had not been related to fandom, because this is my fandom journal.

Dear So-Called-Professional Authors, kindly remove your cranium from your rectal cavity.

Not only do I think that the question here is an oversimplification of a serious issue, I also think that in asking it this way, LJ is unintentionally saying that fan-fiction is about as relevant as what I ate for breakfast this morning.

There seem to be several schools of thought regarding fan-fiction. Some people love it, others like it, some think it's "creative, in a way". Some are fairly neutral, some regard it as an alternative to "real" writing, some consider it stealing, others call it outright plagiarism. Some idiots, such as Diana Gabaldon, (or this person) refer to it in the same vein as "selling your children into white slavery" (screencap here) which is not only racist (white slavery is somehow more objectionable than slavery in general?) but woefully ignorant. (For more on Diana Gabaldon, please see the fandom-wank entry.)

( I have never before been tempted to answer a livejournal "writer's block" question, but I'm breaking my silence for this one. )
