Bucky Rescues Himself: A Rec List

(That doesn't mean he doesn't have help, it just means he makes the decisions about his recovery. He does not get, or need to be, 'rescued' like a damsel in distress, he either chooses to go to others and ask for help, or he gets the help he needs without being told/ordered to. This means forming relationships and a support network, learning basic life skills that were denied to him while he was the winter soldier, and making choices for himself. It does not mean therapy or the absence of mental illness.)

Life for Me Ain't Been No Crystal Stair, by tigriswolf (on Ao3) word count: 24,076

Summary: The man who was once a weapon (and is trying to become a man again) finds a child wheezing one night. It awakens something inside him. [or, the ex-Winter Soldier imprints on a child and lets her become his conscience]
Warnings: canon-typical violence, homelessness, references to (past) child abuse, dubious moral choices, non-explicit torture/death of bad guys. Some references are made to drugging/capturing/imprisoning Bucky without his consent although it never actually occurs.
Excellent Things: Bucky's POV, Bucky rescues himself, Bucky helps others, Bucky forges his own identity, A+ worldbuilding, Excellent original and supporting characters, Bucky Bears exist, the good guys are prevented from fucking up too badly, I didn't notice any ableism (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
Notes: not a single story so much as a bunch of interconnected stories that all take place in the same universe. Some chapters include alternate POVs. The characters are all pretty well thought out and have depth and breadth, but more importantly is that this story starts with Bucky as "The Soldier" and he slowly recovers his sense of self. While the story doesn't contain any (noticable to me) ableism, it does pretty much gloss over any issues related to Bucky's mental health or physical disability. Even though the writing style and POV changes drastically from chapter to chapter, it's all well-written and engaging, and you will fall in love with this universe and everyone therin. More importantly, the reunion between Steve and Bucky takes place when Bucky actually reaches out to him, which is something that rarely occurs in fic (rather than Steve 'finding' him or them being reunited in battle).

Living On My Own, by rekishi (on Ao3) word count: 26,107

Summary: James Barnes is back in the world and finds that not only has there been 1) an alien invasion, but 2) Howard Stark had a kid. One that dispenses unsolicited life advice, no less. Oh, and 3) Captain America is alive again, after getting himself killed by his own recklessness in a move so stupid only Steve could have come up with it. In which James learns to do laundry, turns into an accidental neighborhood vigilante and makes Tony Stark a happy grease monkey, all while he figures out where to stake his claim.
Warnings: Violence, Gore, (attempted) harm to children
Excellent Things: Bucky's POV, Bucky forges his own identity, Bucky helps others, Bucky Accidentally Becomes a Masked Vigilante
Notes: This fic isn't my absolute favourite, but it's definitely up there. There are some ways in which its difficult for me to read, but oh boy oh boy does it hit the spot. Bucky forges friendships with other people and asserts his agency, although he does intentionally hide his whereabouts/presence from Steve which some people might not want to read about.

This, You Protect, by owlet (on Ao3) word count: 64,326

Summary: The mission resets abruptly, from objective: kill to objective: protect
Warnings: canon-typical violence, PTSD, stalking. Also, HYDRA.
Excellent Things: Bucky's POV, Bucky helps others, Bucky makes friends.
Notes: This is, by far, the single best story I've ever read. Bar none. Doesn't even matter what fandom you're into. This is The Best Story, possibly Ever, In the History of the Universe. Bucky's POV, begins in the last moments of CAtWS. Bucky's subconscious recalibrates his mission settings, and thus begins his adventures in Protecting Steve. Additonal bonuses for excellent characterization of Bucky, Sam, Natasha, and Jarvis. Fall in love with several OCs, one of whom is a cat. Rediscover the joy of Starbucks. Realize that grilled cheese is, in fact, the perfect food. Bucky starts off as the Asset and slowly reclaims his personhood as he attempts to prevent Steve from dying horribly due to not having any self-preservation instincts. There are a few things that aren't particularly healthy (non-consensual surveillance, behaviour that should be classified as stalking). On the flip side, there are also several different characters all making the independent decision to respect Bucky's choices, even though they personally disagree with them. There is a sort-of-sequel of loosely connected shorts that follows, which is 100% fluff and I cannot reccomend enough.

Color by Numbers, by vitoliel (on Ao3)

Summary: The Soldier came up with the plan in his spare time, though he never actually believed he’d put it into practice. Hydra’s reach seemed too complete – too powerful – to actually consider running. But he thought about it. And then the man stopped fighting. And he said he knew him. And the Soldier felt…felt… He knew what he felt was important. So, he ran.
Warnings: Self Harm, Suicidal Ideation, canon-typical violence
Additional Warnings: this story WILL make you cry, possibly with Ugly Tears. If you are not prepared to have *~feelings~* about Gummy Bears you are not prepared to read this story.
Excellent Things: Bucky rescues himself (well, he tries to),
Notes: This story is one of my favourites not only because it's Bucky's POV but because it does some really unique things with his amnesia and the ways in which his memory has been altered/erased. It also will make you cry over Gummy Bears, sorry, but it is going to happen and you need to be prepared for it. Additionally, the way Bucky is treated when he attempts to reconnect with Steve (the way the Winter Soldier is usually apprehended in fic) is shown from Bucky's POV. The aftermath and implications of that treatment are also shown from his POV, which is a rare and beautiful thing. The good guys fuck up, in a pretty major (albeit, understandable) way, but they figure it out pretty quickly and attempt to fix their mistakes.

New Tricks, by OdditiyBoddity (on Ao3) words:

Summary:The one where Bucky busts up a dog-fighting ring.
Warnings: Violence, PTSD, animal cruelty/animal abuse, animal death, past abuse
Excellent Things: Bucky Rescues himself, Lucky aka Pizza Dog, team friendship, original (animal) characters, platonic friendships
Notes: While this story takes place post-reunion, and doesn't give information as to how that took place, this is DEFINITELY a story in which Bucky rescues himself. Mostly because this is about him realizing that a life of violence is hurting him, and making the decision to retire from superhero-ing. He doesn't rescue himself from hydra but he DOES take steps to protect himself from the things that are hurting him. There are also references to animal abuse/cruelty, specifically with regards to the dog-fighting ring mentioned in the summary.

On Your Way Up To The Light, by Dira Sudis (on Ao3), words: 11,784

Summary: He could learn to be Sam's friend, even if he hadn't figured out yet how to be Steve's.
Warnings: Violence, PTSD, Amnesia, Dissociation
Additional Warnings: contains a single scene of somewhat dubiously consensual kissing/frottage. I personally see it as consensual although perhaps undernegotiated. It's clear that neither person intends to take advantage of the other, and neither regrets it.
Excellent Things: Deals really well with Bucky's amnesia and identity. Sam Wilson's everything.
Notes: Established Sam/Steve, with minor Bucky/Sam and later in the series, Bucky/Sam/Steve. Starts with a Bucky who feels like the Winter Soldier but desperately wants to be James Barnes, and shows a slow progression from his first encounter with Steve on the Bridge to him making the conscious decision to reclaim his identity. Also does a wonderful job of depicting his anxiety and fear that Steve won't want him if he can't remember their shared history. A+++ Sam Wilson characterization.

***Assets Out of Containment, by follow_the_sun (on Ao3), words: 59,035

Summary : After CA:TWS, Bucky Barnes suspects HYDRA is running a project in a little place called Jurassic World, and decides to go poke it with a stick.
Warnings: Violence, PTSD, past torture, medical experimentation
Excellent Things:This shows us a side of Bucky we rarely get to see in fic: the ruthlessly efficient soldier side. This is a Bucky Barnes who is no longer the brainwashed Winter Soldier, who knows exactly who he is, but who is still avoiding Steve and trying to take down HYDRA on his own. And yes, that's a good thing. There is a pretty impressive cast of characters, and the story itself manages to incorporate the Jurrassic World canon while weaving itself into the movie's plot holes, filling out the details and giving us a way better story for it.
Notes: This takes Bucky, the main cast of Agents of SHIELD, and the storyline of Jurrassic World, then puts them all together into something that honestly needs to have its own comic book run. It builds up quickly, but once the action stops, there's barely any time to breathe. This story is funny and heartbreaking while also being a pretty solid nonstop action sequence, with Bucky Barnes & co. going up against actual Nazi Dinosaurs. I had to stop reading several times to run around and flail, I got way emotionally invested in all the characters, and Bucky is very much a sarcastic, mouthy little shit while also displaying impressive competence and dedication to his mission. It also doesn't shy away from Bucky's PTSD, showing us just how much his mental illness affects his ability to do his job, and just how much effort he expends to keep himself functional. Highly reccomend, if you don't mind somewhat graphic violent imagery/gore (because of the dinosaurs).
Additional Notes: I'm including this in the "Bucky Saves Himself" category, although it qualifies for Bucky POV as well. I have decided that Bucky's decisionmaking, autonomy, and choices in this story (as well as occasionally having to save himself from physical danger) make this story one about self-discovery and reclaiming identity, it just does that while also fighting Nazi dinosaurs. Not at all an angst-fest, despite my raving.

***4 Minute Window, by Speranza (on Ao3), words: 24,127

Summary: "Look, if they catch me," Bucky muttered, "they're either going to kill me or they're going to put me in a box with a little window and—Steve, I can't."
Warnings: Violence, non-consensual surveillance verging on Big Brother territory, allusions to torture, period-typical homophobia (in a flashback), use of homophobic slurs
Excellent Things: Established Relationship (Steve/Bucky), Bucky Rescues Himself, Bucky Rescues Steve, Natasha POV, A+ characterization, no noticable ableism
Notes: Everything about this story is excellent. Um. Natasha POV that is just so good, and Peggy Carter being the only one to understand what's happening, and Sesame Street and Super Grover. I cannot believe this wasn't the first story on my list, holy shit. I apologise wholeheartedly for the oversight. Heartbreaking in the best possible way.

***Out of the Dead Land, by emilyenrose (on Ao3), words: 62,707

Summary: Someone is building machines that look and act like people. Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier tries to be Bucky Barnes.
Warnings: Violence, Brainwashing, Torture, Loss of Agency,
Excellent Things: Bucky POV, deals with amnesia/memory loss. Also really highlights the effect HYDRA's treatment of Bucky/The Winter Solder has on his personal sense of identity.
Notes: UGH this story is so good, it's heavily plot driven, with human-passing HYDRAbots that get increasingly complex and sophisticated over time. All the emotional stuff, the character interactions, is SO GOOD that it's hard to actually write about it, possibly because the actual, like, plot is so engaging. I mostly want to flail about this story. This was the first post-winter-soldier fic I read where there Bucky's memories weren't returned to him as a matter of course--- where Bucky has to actually struggle with the fact that he cannot and may never remember that part of his life. This story doesn't really deal too much with Bucky's mental health, but it doesn't gloss it over either, and it's obvious from Bucky's internal narrative that there are long term and far-reaching effects that aren't limited to amnesia. I could probably talk about this story all day.

Winter Soldier/Bucky POV Recs:

(Some stories in this category are written from the Winter Soldier's POV, and not Bucky's. I consider them to be different, because in some stories he does not think of himself as Bucky Barnes. He might reclaim his old identity, or forge a new one. Regardless of whether he thinks of himself as James, Barnes, Bucky, "The Asset", "The Soldier" or any other persona, I'm reccing stories based on what I think is a well-thought out characterization of what the inside of his head would be like after several decades of conditioning and torture.)

Secondary Function, by stoatsandwich (on Ao3) words: 1,714

Summary: The Winter Soldier is waiting for his new handlers to hurt him.
Warnings: Darkfic, (internalized) dehumanization, allusions to past rape/torture.
Notes: I love this story because I think this is precisely what would happen if the Avengers 'recovered' Barnes in the way that most fanfic describes.I think that the Soldier would think of them as his new handlers, and would expect to be treated the way he was treated with HYDRA. Nobody hurts him in this story, although his expectations are made clear in the narrative.

Exchange Rate, by freshbakedlady (on Ao3) words: 13,190

Summary: Bucky's older memories are coming back, sometimes at the cost of more recent ones. What he cannot forget is tearing the wings off Sam Wilson. Too bad Bucky just let Steve talk him into staying with him and Sam. Consumed by guilt, the only thing Bucky knows to do by way of apology is to let Sam hurt him back. Fortunately, Sam has better ideas.
Warnings: Violence, Body Horror, Guilt.
Additonal Warnings: (from the author) Bucky has repeated fantasies of letting his arm be violently--though, in context, consensually--removed or damaged. This only happens in his head, no damage is done to his arm, and Sam never treats Bucky with any kind of violence. It is implied that Bucky experiences some prosthetic rejection toward his arm. There are canon-typical levels of violence against Hydra agents.
Notes: Bucky assumes (based on his understanding of his own prosthesis) that Sam's wings were wired into his nervous system the same way. This story deals with his assumption, and the resulting guilt/horror he has when he thinks he's responsible for the loss of Sam's wings.

Lilies with Full Hands, by refusals (on Ao3) words: 102,120

Summary: His body is not his own. This may not be the first thing they teach him, but it is the first thing he learns.
Warnings: Past Non-Con, Interalized Ableism, Internalized Victim-Blaming, Self-Harm, Suicidal Ideation, (Interrupted) Suicide Attempt
Additional Warnings: This deals with Bucky's HYDRA conditioning, and the difficulty he has in reclaiming his body. It contains some scenes where Bucky says "yes" to things because he is not capable of saying "no" even if he wants to. In some scenes, he gives permission for a touch but is unable to articulate that he wants it to stop. Even though nobody intends to violate his autonomy, his inability to refuse results in some situations that are non-consensual. Bucky has little to no memory of these situations but it is made clear that nobody has had sex with him during those times. There is one instance in which a therapeutic practice is performed without adequate preparation and without allowing for informed consent, which causes additional problems (I consider this to be abuse on the part of the professional).
Notes: This is after Bucky and Steve are reunited, and I don't remember whether the reunion itself is mentioned or referencd. Despite not being about Bucky rescuing himself, this story is less about a rescue from immediate danger and more about him struggling to overcome his conditioning/brainwashing. This story contains complex, thoughtful, and in-depth looks at the treatments Bucky undergoes for his various mental illnesses. Does not sugarcoat anything, nor suggest a sudden "fix" for those problems. Bucky's 'recovery' is slow and painful. Accurate depiction of PTSD. Violations of Bucky's bodily autonomy are all dealt with and never glossed over. Bonus Sam-being-a-good-bro and even more bonus original-service-dog-character. Also includes some pretty amazing friendships between Bucky and people-who-aren't-Steve, and a hopeful-but-not-abruptly-perfect ending.

Summary :A blond and a brunette walk into a bar. It's not the first time it's happened, and it definitely won't be the last.
Warnings: violence, panic attacks, PTSD, recovery, suicidal ideation, disordered eating, foul language.
Excellent Things: Kate Bishop, platonic friendships, A+ worldbuilding,
Notes: post-reunion, although it does begin by showing the reunion itself (although not the circumstances leading up to it). If you're ever wondering why/how to use second person POV in your writing, this is a beautiful example. Also contains blond jokes as a narrative device (don't knock it till you've tried it) and contains a whole lot of beautifully written friendships. This story contains violence but is 100% a feel-good fic. Additionally, the other stories in this series (re: re: re: re: blond joke) are less violent but equally wonderful.

Fic Recs Wanted/Needed (A Rant!)

Regarding Bucky Barnes/The Winter Sldier

I'm a sucker for Avengers stories, because I love superheroes and I love friendships. And, while I hadn't really read a lot of Winter Soldier fic before the release of Captain America: the Winter Soldier (henceforth referred to as CAtWS), there are a lot of stories available now that deal with Bucky Barnes both pre- and post- TWS. And, uh, I hate a lot of them. I mean, just--- SO MANY stories, I hate them with fiery, burning passion. And it's not that they're poorly written or poorly characterized, it's not that they're unrealistic or anything. The main problem I have with post-CAtWS fic is this:

They're awful to Bucky.

I know he's a fictional character, but in-universe, he's a person. And the fandom as a whole seems to not understand how ableist and demeaning they are towards Bucky's character, whether writing "recovery" stories or simply skipping to the place where they try to "fix" him.

I don't know what most people are thinking when they write Bucky, but, as a person with clinical depression and PTSD as well as general anxiety disorder (disorders?) I know that the way mental illness is treated in fandom is condescending, patronizing, and infantilizing, and it's pretty insulting in general. The other thing (speaking as an able-bodied person with only limited experience working with physically disabled persons) is that they (we) generally ignore Bucky's physical disability, and have no problem using it to the advantage of others and/or violating his bodily autonomy at will.

And these things are not okay. I don't care that Bucky is mentally ill: you do not share personal details of another person's mental illness or emotional distress with others. You do not talk about him as if he is not there. You do NOT get to decide what treatment a person is/should be getting without their input. You absolutely do NOT fail to mention that they have a right to refuse treatment. I don't care that you don't see Bucky as "disabled" because his prosthetic works just like an organic limb. You do not take someone's prosthetic away (not even "for their own good" which is a bullshit excuse), you do not perform scans or surgeries on them without their consent, you do not make the decisions about someone else's body for them.

To be perfectly honest, 90% of the post-CAtWS fic about Bucky is written from Steve's (or another Avenger's) persepective, and often being written by a neurotypical author with (limited, if any) understanding of mental illness. And that really comes through in the writing, whether intentional or not, because I know what it's like to have depression or anxiety and PTSD and I know what it's like to not be able to get out of bed, to struggle with hypervigilance, to do all the things that fandom thinks that Bucky needs to be "cured" from. And I hate reading yet another summary of yet another story where Bucky is "broken" and the others get to "fix" him. I hate reading yet another story about a bunch of neurotypicals sitting around, discussing the best way to make the character I love the most stop being like me.

I hate it so much, and so I'm putting together a rec list of stories that aren't like that.

(And yes, I want you to rec things to me if they qualify.)

Qualifications:

Bucky's POV (or, The Winter Soldier's POV, depending on how he wishes to identify)
- alternating POV is also acceptable
Bucky must have agency-- as in, he must make decisions for himself.
No violation of Bucky's Bodily Autonomy.
- That means the good guys don't take his arm or attempt to disable his arm without his explicit permission
- That means the good guys don't render him unconscious without his permission
- That means the good guys don't attempt to scan, learn about, or work on his arm without his permission
- That means the good guys don't strip him, take his weapons/possessions, or do anything to him when he is unconscious (except for first aid if necessary)
- This means Bucky should not be imprisoned or restrained in any way, unless he is a danger to others. (I don't care if he's a danger to himself, after 70 years of torture, you don't get to tell him what to do with his own body even if he IS self-harming)
- That means no sex or sexual contact unless/until he is able to consent
- That means if any of the above happens, it needs to be written in a way that makes it clear that this is Not Good.
Any non-Steve-Rogers Avengers need to develop a friendship with Bucky before they're privy to any personal information about him. (If the author has written an established history between the Winter Soldier and Black Widow, I'm willing to allow Natasha to be an exception as well.) This is because if I were Bucky, I would feel awful and humiliated/violated if I found out my friend was casually chatting about my emotional breakdowns to a bunch of strangers. Even with mutual friends, that would be deeply uncomfortable. Unless Bucky has given his permission, that's a violation of his privacy.
Preferably, nobody uses ableist slurs. (With regards to anybody's mental illness/disability or physical disability)

If those criteria are met, I want that story. If not-- and yes, I understand that even good characters are meant to be human, and thus capable o error-- I want it to be clear that they have made a mistake. If the good guys fuck up, I need them to KNOW they've fucked up.

Alternate Criteria (Preferred):

Bucky Rescues Himself.

Notes: This can be read as one-sided unrequited Thor/Loki, but alternately reads just as well as Gen. All relationships are implied, there is no sex in this story (seriously I don't know how THAT happened). Thor/Jane, Clint/Coulson are both considered canon because I said so.
